Interacting with Children Living in Remote Rural Areas

Learning from "Santa Projects" previously held in other locations, MMT held its own Christmas event in December 2020. At the center of this activity were the young students of a rural village in eastern Taiwan, where there are lingering education issues due to a lack of resources and a small population. Empathizing with these children, who are making efforts to realize their individual goals and dreams even in this challenging environment, MMT commenced providing support.
After enjoying a drive with MMT staff members dressed as Santa, the children were treated to a fun-filled lunch party.
During the activities, the children introduced a Taiwanese shadow play and also had the opportunity to experience Japanese culture through handicrafts such as origami and making votive tablets to write their wishes on.

This event was featured in 50 media publications and we received a lot of positive feedback. We will continue to hold activities that make children feel compassion for society and fills the hearts of every employee with joy.

In Colombia, MCOL conducted the "Santa Project" for the second time in December 2020. Participating in the event were 60 MCOL staff members who together with 56 children supported by the Fundacion Hogar San Mauricio enjoyed Christmas celebrations for a period of eight hours. In Colombia, it is customary to celebrate Christmas with family and friends and exchange gifts within the family over about nine days. This custom is known as the "Novenas." During the project this time, we presented as gifts to the children sports shoes, hygiene kits, towels, and snacks known as Christmas food.
The children also enjoyed decorating as they wished the Santa hats they received as Christmas costumes.

In Japan, together with volunteer Mazda car owners, we are taking part in community contribution activities for children in orphanages and for parents and children of single-parent families.
The drive event for children of an orphanage facility in Kanagawa, which started in 2003, was expanded and named the "Santa Drive" in 2009. Since 2015 we have also been holding the drive in Tokyo in cooperation with companies and organizations. This event was also introduced in Hiroshima in 2018.
In FY2020, the event was held only in Hiroshima, due to the impact of COVID-19, but one-third of the 30 parents and children who participated through the Hiroshima Prefecture Single Parents and Family Welfare Association had attended the event on a previous occasion and were looking forward to the extraordinary experience. Twenty-three roadsters assembled for the event, and a number of Mazda officers and employees also participated. The parents and children, accompanied by drivers dressed as Santa Claus and reindeer, enjoyed driving through the city of Hiroshima in roadsters adorned in wreaths and ribbons and other festive Christmas decorations. The organizer made the comment, "This year, due to the impact of COVID-19, we see many people walking around the city, wearing masks and looking somewhat downcast. Under these conditions, I hope that we can bring smiles to the faces of the children and people in the city, and that they will be able to feel the happiness of everyday life."
