The Q Global Tech Award is presented by Quattroruote, an Italian automobile magazine, which was founded in 1956. The winner is selected by a panel of experts from various automobile magazines in 15 different countries. The winner is announced during Quattroruote Day, an important event for the European automotive industry organized by the aforementioned magazine in Milan, Italy. At this year's event, SKYACTIV-X was honored as the most notable and innovative technical achievement of the year.

What is the SKYACTIV-X next-generation gasoline engine?

This groundbreaking new engine features SPCCI (SPark Controlled Compression Ignition), an innovative system developed in-house at Mazda that provides seamless transitions between spark ignition with a conventional air-fuel mixture and compression ignition with an extra-lean mix. It therefore combines the advantages of gasoline engines (such as high rpm output and cleaner emissions) and diesels (superior low-end response and fuel economy), improving efficiency and torque production by up to 30% relative to the current gasoline-powered SKYACTIV-G, while reducing fuel consumption by an average of 20%.

"We believe that the SKYACTIV-X will open the door to accomplishing our dream of a gasoline engine as energy efficient as a diesel engine and with a diesel's prompt accelerator response, but as linear and quiet as a gasoline unit and with a level of efficiency approaching ideal internal combustion," said Kiyoshi Fujiwara, Director and Senior Managing Executive Officer at Mazda Motor Corporation. "I am very proud of our engineers. These awards are a great encouragement to all of us and encourage us to continue enhancing our efforts so that this innovative technology can reach our customers with the highest level of quality."
