16. The 787B

Mazda entered two 787B racecars and one 787 for the 1991 Le Mans. Both models were powered by the R26B four-rotor naturally aspirated engine, though the 787B boasted several improvements over the previous year's 787. While similar in appearance, the newer car featured an updated nose cone and air intakes that reduced drag and enhanced cooling. A 50mm longer wheelbase provided greater handling and stability and enabled higher cornering speeds. The 787B also had redesigned subframe engine mounts, which raised body rigidity and robustness. Carbon brakes - a first for Mazda - boosted the braking force and improved handling by reducing the vehicle's unsprung weight.
