12. Gunning for 800PS with the 4-rotor R26B engine

At the end of Le Mans 1989, Mazda set a new target of "800PS and overall victory in one year."The plan was to achieve 800PS at 10,000 rpm. However, at those speeds contemporary gearboxes would not have been able to survive the full 24 hours. The target was adjusted to 700 PS at 9,000 rpm. The finished four-rotor R26B featured several cutting-edge technologies including a stepless variable air intake system, three sparkplugs per rotor, peripheral port injection and ceramic apex seals. The air intake system automatically controlled the length of the inlet pipes to ensure optimum performance at all engine speeds.
