Chapter 1: Motor sport challenges in Europe (8/10)
8. The four-hour RAC Tourist Trophy Race/The West German Touring Car Grand Prix, summer 1970
The four-hour RAC Tourist Trophy in England was Mazda's first European sprint race. Mazda's R100 (known in Japan as the Familia Rotary Coupe) took on Europe's top touring cars, such as the Ford Escort, Alpha Romeo GT and BMW, driven by the likes of the great Jackie Stewart, and claimed a respectable 8th place.
At the six-hour West German Touring Car Grand Prix at the Nurburgring, Mazda was up against exceedingly fast and reliable rivals, which included the Ford Capri and BMW with its home advantage.
All three R100 cars completed the race without major trouble, just missing the podium to finish 4th, 5th and 6th. The experience also provided the team with valuable information for their next race.
