3. The emergence of the racing engine

The racing version of the Mazda 110S engine was based on the standard 491 x 2cc dual-rotor type 10A rotary engine. Improvements included a combination intake port setup, in which side intake ports operated at low engine speeds, switching to peripheral intake ports at high rpm.

This arrangement, in combination with a Hitachi-made Weber twin sidedraft carburetor, pushed the racing engine to develop 130 bhp at 7000 rpm. This impressive power drove the Mazda 110S to fourth place in its debut at the Marathon de la Route 84-hour endurance race in 1968.
