Mazda Motor Corporation unveils a prototype of the new open sports car Roadster "NR-A," designed for motor sports beginners today. The car is expected to go on sale in late 2001.

Powered by a 1600 DOHC engine, Roadster "NR-A" features enhanced suspension and brakes, and increased radiator capacity. This new model is designed to be a registered vehicle, enabling owners to race on the weekends while using the car on a daily basis. "NR-A" is a base model of a racing car, designed for motor sports beginners. The suggested retail price will be around 2,000,000 yen, including these enhancements.

Dealer options, Mazda Speed NR-A pack (6-pointed role cage, 4-pointed seat belts/seat belt anchors, front/rear large pulling hooks) are available for "NR-A." Users can join Roadster "One Make" Races in the NR-A category, authorized by JAF (Japan Automobile Federation).

Mazda developed Roadster with the concept of "feeling of oneness between car and driver." With its excellent maneuverability and styling, Roadster is a favorite of open air enthusiasts throughout the world.

With a total production volume of more than 600,000 units* over 12 years, Mazda Roadster is recognized in the Guinness Book of World Records as the world's top-selling light weight open two-seater sports car model.

Mazda will sponsor Roadster "One Make" Races, authorized by JAF, in the NR-A category. Races will begin in Japan in May 2002 (see the September 3 press release for the details).

With the introduction of this new race car, Mazda offers a new lifestyle to families and friends who enjoy racing on the weekends.
