A total of 94 cars entered the 1984 Daytona 24-hour race. Of the 82 that made it through qualifying, 15 were rotary-engined Mazdas (four in the GTP class, one in the GTO class, and 10 in the GTU class). This high proportion highlighted the strength of the rotary engine in the IMSA. The single Mazda RX-7 in the GTO class was driven by Roger Mandeville and powered by the 13B rotary engine with peripheral ports and fuel injectors. It finished in third place in the GTO class and 14th overall.
