In 1974, Mazda established the Phoenix Plan, a five-year company wide initiative to improve fuel efficiency. In line with this, Mazda withdrew from touring car racing. However, by supporting private teams and supplying engines for the Fuji Grand Champion Series, Mazda kept the fire of motor sports engineering burning and continued to expand the rotary engine's reputation.
