The racing version of the Mazda Familia R100 coupe made its debut at the Singapore Grand Prix in April 1969.
This race was seen as a prelude for upcoming European competitions, and a chance to try out the racing type 10A engine (195bhp/9000rpm).
  The original plan for a low resistance megaphone muffler had to be abandoned when cracks appeared in practice due to resonance from the rotary engine's characteristic throaty exhaust note. The exhaust system was changed to a pair of robust stainless steel straight pipes, and the R100 swept to victory.
