Chapter 1: Motor sport challenges in Europe (5/10)
5. The Singapore Grand Prix, April 1969
The racing version of the Mazda Familia R100 coupe made its debut at the Singapore Grand Prix in April 1969.
This race was seen as a prelude for upcoming European competitions, and a chance to try out the racing type 10A engine
(195bhp/9000rpm).
The original plan for a low resistance megaphone muffler had to be abandoned when cracks appeared
in practice due to resonance from the rotary engine's characteristic throaty exhaust note.
The exhaust system was changed to a pair of robust stainless steel straight pipes, and the R100 swept to victory.
