Chapter 1: Motor sport challenges in Europe (2/10)
2. The 84-hour Marathon De La Route endurance race
The 84-hour Marathon De La Route endurance race at the
Nürburgring in Germany combined elements of high-speed circuit racing with arduous road rallying.
Mazda entered the race on August 21, 1968 with two 110S models. From the start, two Porsches and a Lancia formed the lead, with the two 110Ss close behind. In the 81st hour, with just three hours left to go, one 110S lost a wheel due to a broken rear axle and was forced to retire. The other went on to claim fourth overall.
Despite one car retiring, this result proved the potential and the excellence of the rotary engine.
