Hydrogen and the Rotary Engine

Towards a Hydrogen Society
The global environment and the car society
There is a vital need to respond to global warming and other environmental issues that affect the planet. As global car ownership continues to expand, automakers such as Mazda must redouble their efforts to achieve cleaner exhaust emissions and to reduce CO2 emissions through improvements in fuel economy. We must also reduce our dependence on fossil fuels, which are in danger of depletion.
Cars affect the environment in various ways according to factors such as the global region, vehicle characteristics and type of fuel. For this reason, Mazda considered it necessary to develop multiple solutions.
Issues the automobile industry is facing
Towards a sustainable future
More eco-friendly, more Zoom-Zoom cars. In March 2007, Mazda announced its long-term vision for technology development, the Sustainable Zoom-Zoom plan. In line with the plan, Mazda is committed to working towards an exciting, sustainable future for cars, for people and for the Earth.
The hydrogen rotary engine is one of the technologies leading our Sustainable Zoom-Zoom initiatives.
From a C-society (carbon) to an H-society (hydrogen)
Hydrogen is a clean source of energy that can be produced from various resources. Projects aimed at realizing a society that uses hydrogen as its main energy source are ongoing all around the world.
  • - Extracting energy by reacting hydrogen with oxygen produces only water as a byproduct.
  • - Hydrogen is not only produced by purifying fossil fuel, it is also a byproduct of electrolytic reactions and various industrial processes.
  • - If hydrogen is produced from a renewable resource, we can realize a society based on recycled-energy.
