Rotary Engine

Event Information
Event Reports
On May 30, 2007 the Cosmo Sport Owners Club visited Mazda's Hiroshima headquarters. Shinichiro Uetsuki from Mazda's PR department was there to report.

The Mazda 110S, known as the Cosmo Sport in Japan, went on sale on May 30, 1967. In 2007, May 30 marked the 40th anniversary of the birth of the rotary engine. To commemorate this, members of the Cosmo Sport Owners Club gathered at Mazda's headquarters in Hiroshima.

On the day, despite heavy rain in the morning, eleven 110S models returned to the homestead.

Many visitors stopped to take photographs. It's not every day you get to see a phalanx of 110S sports cars!

Among line up was a unique model in The Return of Ultraman's "Monster Attack Team" livery. It brought back a few memories for those of us in our forties.

On the 40th birthday of the Cosmo Sport, Mazda was presented with a birthday cake by the Cosmo Sport Owners Club. It was specially made for the occasion by a member of the club who runs a patisserie. The rotor on top of the cake is life size, and even includes apex seals made from chocolate. A true hand-made work of art, and delicious too.

At the ceremony, the Cosmo Sport Owners Club president, Yuji Suzuki, presents the cake to President Imaki.

The original plan to blow out the candle on the birthday cake was quickly revised when President Imaki quipped, "We don't want to extinguish the rotary's fire!"

Memorabilia from Mazda included a 110S cutaway illustration that was bequeathed to the Cosmo Sport Owners Club.

This cutaway illustration was hand drawn by one of Mazda's former designers and was seen in public here for the first time! It is beautifully drawn. Done entirely with color pencils, this picture is an accurate representation of the real thing, right down to the number of teeth on the gears and the stitching on the seat upholstery.

Here's the picture on display, a very precious work of art! Alongside it are some original design sketches. The amount of work that went into them is overwhelming.

-This flag was made for the RE 40th anniversary. It will probably also be used for various other events to come.
-At the start of the today, all those involved wrote a personal message on it.
-I imagine more messages will be added when the flag is displayed for the next event at Mazda's R&D center in Yokohama on June 2 and 3.
