Twenty years have passed since the first generation MX-5 was launched.

The Mazda MX-5 (known as the Mazda Roadster in Japan, previously known as the MX-5 Miata in North America) made a sensational debut at the Chicago International Motor Show in February 1989, and revived the two-seat open-top sports car market all over the world.

Ever since its debut, the MX-5 has continued to deliver “fun to drive,” and has built up a wide fan base among lightweight sports car lovers all over the world.

The MX-5 has sold over 850,000 units globally, proving that the enjoyment of complete control, the exhilaration of open-top motoring and unique style have universal appeal. The MX-5 has won over 180 awards in various countries and the current third generation MX-5 boasts the 2005-2006 Japan Car of the Year award.

The essence of the MX-5 is the embodiment of “Jinba Ittai” (rider and horse as one). In developing the MX-5, Mazda wanted to build an agile roadster that allowed the driver to feel truly connected to the car.
