The RX-8 Hydrogen RE is the world's first hydrogen rotary engine vehicle. It was developed and commercialized by Mazda. This engine reduces consumption of petroleum resources without sacrificing torque, acceleration or the lively sound of an internal combustion engine. The RX-8 Hydrogen RE is the''ultimate eco-car''which achieves harmony between high eco-friendliness-with zero CO2 and trace NOx emissions-and Mazda's signature natural driving feel unique to internal combustion engines.
Eight cars have already been leased in Japan since 2006. Starting in 2008, Mazda will participate in the Norwegian hydrogen highway project''HyNor''by delivering 30 RX-8 Hydrogen REs in succession.
