Like Mazda6 (Atenza) and CX-5 before it, the 3rd generation Mazda3 (Axela) adopts both Mazda's next-generation SKYACTIV Technology and its new KODO-Soul of Motion design theme. In Japan it is offered in gasoline, diesel and hybrid versions, making Mazda the first Japanese automaker to offer three different powertrain types in a single model in the Japanese market.

·Mazda's advanced safety vehicle Atenza ASV-5 begins trials on public roads

Mazda developed the Atenza ASV-5 equipped with advanced driving safety support system and began testing it on public roads from September 2013. The vehicle was used to test a driving safety support system which utilizes an intelligent transport system cooperatively developed by industrial, academic and government organizations. The car also took part in the 20th ITS World Congress Tokyo 2013 in October and demonstrated a futuristic safety system in which streetcars and automobiles communicate with each on the streets of Hiroshima.

Mazda introduced Mazda Connect with the 3rd generation Mazda3 (Axela). This next-generation car connectivity system is designed to allow drivers to safely enjoy the convenience of their smartphone while in the car and enables the use of a wide variety of web applications and services.

Mazda's Representative Director and Chairman of the Board, President and CEO, Takashi Yamanouchi was awarded the Order of the Aztec Eagle. The order is the highest decoration bestowed upon foreign citizens by the government of the United Mexican States. Mexican President, His Excellency Enrique Peña Nieto, presented the award at a ceremony at the Embassy of Mexico in Tokyo.

A Grand Opening Ceremony was held to mark the beginning of local production of the Mazda2 at a new plant owned by Vina Mazda, an assembly and sales company in Vietnam. The plant is located in the Nui Thanh district of Quang Nam province, central Vietnam.

A new model added to the Axela lineup boasted greatly improved fuel economy of 20km/L (10-15 mode test).

The lineup includes a new 13-SKYACTIV trim grade that delivers excellent fuel economy of 30.0 km/liter (10-15 mode test) or 25.0 km/L (JC08 mode test).

·Hofu Plant builds nine millionth car

Cumulative production at Hofu plant reached nine million units 28 years and two months after vehicle production began in September 1982. Cumulative production rose from eight to nine million units in just 2 years and 5 months due to high volumes of the Mazda Axela (Mazda3), production of which began in November 2008.
