Safety and Health for Workers
In light of a serious accident in 2004, Mazda has formulated its Safety and Health Creed, and created a Safety Resolution for all employees to declare. Furthermore, we have conducted educational activities and training such as education aimed at enhancing safety awareness, and are improving equipment safety. As a result, in FY2006 we had no serious accidents, and downtime due to other accidents was also reduced.
Additionally, in FY2006 we emphasized "Safety & Health Activities" which includes our group companies, and are implementing support for training with the aim of raising awareness amongst both managers and supervisors, and employees.

Mazda Workplace Safety and Health Management System
In FY2005, Mazda introduced a safety and health management system to ensure continuous and autonomous safety and health management. This system employs plan-do-check-act (PDCA) procedures. The system's activity plan uses specific risk factors determined through risk assessments. We perform system assessments to determine and evaluate the management system's operating status. This information is linked with the PDCA cycle to reduce the potential for work-related accidents and enhance overall levels of health and hygiene.
- Risk assessment activities
In 2005, we conducted risk assessments of all facilities to determine potential risks during manufacturing and testing activities at factories, as well as office work. We introduced countermeasures based on these factors. In FY2006, we began conducting facility risk assessments whenever equipment is newly introduced or changed. In this manner, Mazda is moving from a recurrence-prevention to a pre-emptive system. - Results of system assessment activities (Initiatives commencing FY2006)
- Ensure that workplace safety and health activities are self-governed and self-contained
- Ensure that weaknesses in safety and health activities are identified and management levels improved
- Reform activities that concentrate on results into activities that focus on process
Strengthened Mental Health Measures and Promoting Lifestyle Improvements

2006 Mental health rally convention
Mazda's companywide health promotion activities place their emphases upon "strengthened mental health measures" and "promoting lifestyle improvements."
Our mental health measures include the development of a consulting system that utilizes specialists, and we are carrying out ongoing seminars both for managers and supervisors, and for employees (autogenic training, etc.). These seminars have raised employee awareness of mental health issues and enabled them to quickly seek help if required. We have put together a team comprising five full time occupational physicians, one part-time mental health occupational physician, and 27 occupational health nurses. The team offers detailed support, ranging from consultations through to follow-up. For employees who have lost time at work due to mental health issues, we have established a "trial work system" and a "shortened work hour resumption system" to assist them in making a smooth return to the workplace.
As a part of our lifestyle improvements, we have implemented a companywide smoke-free day. FY2006 saw our smoking rate drop to 38.4%, with our final target companywide smoker ratio being 27%. Mazda has also set "70% or more 10,000-step days" as a companywide goal, and is promoting walking through measures such as the distribution of pedometers; carrying out events such as the "10,000-step challenge," which aims at the target of 10,000 steps every day; the "Eco-Walk Commuting Program" (with allowance payment);" and the establishment of an internal walking course.
