Promoting a Balance between Work and Personal Life

Well-Developed Programs as an Advanced Company Providing a Balance between Work and One's Personal Life

Mazda has put in place a number of programs to "promote a balance between work and one's personal life."

In 2003, Mazda was awarded the "Family Friendly Company-Health, Labour and Welfare Ministry Excellence Award" by the Minister of Health, Labour and Welfare.

Systems for a Balance Between Work and Personal Life (Detailed)

  • Onsite Daycare Center "Mazda Waku Waku-Kids-En"
In FY2002, Mazda set up the "Waku Waku-Kids-En" in-house daycare facility to be used by employees with pre-school children. This facility has a nurse on duty, and can cope with children who are not well.
  • Super-Flextime
Most of our workplaces have adopted a flextime system for administrative and technical staff who have no fixed office hours, enabling each employee to plan and manage his or her own time
  • Nursing Leave
We have a special leave system that allows employees to take leave without using their annual paid vacation, in the event that a family member is ill. This system applies not only to employees' children, but to any member of the family who lives in the employee's home. Up to 10 days per year of leave may be taken in this way, at the rate of 70% of the paid leave wage. These are well in excess of the legally stipulated levels.
  • Half-Day Paid Leave System
Employees are allowed to take a paid half-day of leave. This option helps employees balance their work with such duties as childrearing, caring for relatives or carrying out personal business at government offices.
  • Special Working Arrangements for Employees Involved with Childcare or Nursing
Staff who are responsible for childrearing, or for caring for other family members can work shorter or more suitable hours. Special arrangements for childrearing are applicable "until the youngest child enters the second grade of primary school," and for care of family members, "for as long as is required." This enables cooperation with after-school childcare programs for younger primary school students in communities where our facilities are located.
  • Promotion of Planned Use of Paid Leave
We promote the planned use of paid leave by employees, with the result that more than 90% of paid leave is taken.
  • Leave for Employees Accompanying a Transferred Family Member (Implemented FY 2003)
Fixed-term leave is granted in the case of employees who accompany their spouse to a transfer posting and to resume their career at the point where they left on return to Mazda.
  • Career Development Leave (Implemented FY2003)
We operate a leave system to attend college or other training courses that contribute to career development.
  • No Overtime Day and Lights-out Policy
We are promoting the coexistence of business efficiency and personal lifestyles by implementing a no overtime day once a week and a regular lights-out time (10 pm) in all offices and technical divisions. Overtime worked during the year totaled 8,100 hours, averaging 335 hours per person.

[Close-up] Acquisition of the Next Generation Development Support Law

In May 2007, Mazda was awarded the "Kurumin" certification mark, based upon the Law to Promote Measures to Support the Development of the Next Generation.

In addition to the various measures to balance employees'one's work and personal lives (see page 32), the last two years have seen the approval of the "introduction of support measures to provide opportunities for skill development and a smooth return to the workplace for employees on childrearing leave (e-learning)"; "promotion of understanding of a support system to combine both work and childrearing (distribution of a special pamphlet companywide)," and a "further enhanced work environment conducive to childrearing (introduction of half-day nursing leave system)."

While placing great importance on employees' individual lifestyles, Mazda will in the future continue to provide an environment in which it is easy to work, and hopes to be a company that will grow along with its employees.
