Comprehensive Improvements of base technologies by SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY

The term SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY covers all Mazda's innovative next-generation base technologies. Mazda is making comprehensive improvements in base technologies, such as enhancing the efficiency of powertrain components including the engine and transmission, reducing vehicle body weight, and improving aerodynamics. The number of models featuring SKYACTIV TECHNOLOGY has steadily increased since the first SKYACTIV-G engine was introduced in the 2011 upgraded Demio. The CX-5, launched in February 2012, was the first model to incorporate the full range of SKYACTIV technologies including the gasoline engine, diesel engine, transmission, body and chassis. The new Atenza/Mazda6, launched in November 2012, is also a full-SKYACTIV model. Moving forward, Mazda plans to steadily increase the number of models around the globe that incorporate the full range of SKACTIV TECHNOLOGY.

Prevailing of Clean Diesel Engines

Mazda believes that there are multiple solutions to address environmental issues, not limited only to electric and hybrid vehicles, and that clean diesel is a new alternative. With this belief, Mazda developed and launched SKYACTIV-D. While in Europe, diesel engine-powered vehicles account for about half of the total number of vehicles sales, the ratio is very low in Japan. Under this circumstance, Mazda introduced the CX-5 and the new Atenza (Mazda6 overseas) equipped with SKYACTIV-D, with the determination to create a market for diesel engines in Japan. As a result, the share of diesel engine-powered vehicles in Japan increased threefold from 0.4% in 2011 to 1.3% in 2012. Mazda will further increase its diesel engine models so as to widely offer customers the alternative of clean diesel engines.

Meanwhile, Mazda joined the Clean Diesel Promotion Association in April 2011 and is working in collaboration with the other members of the Association to promote the recognition of diesel engines by providing information at various events throughout Japan.
