Environmental Management: Environmental Risk Management and Compliance With Laws

Mazda has put in place a range of measures to ensure smooth management of the Company, and to prevent any environmental pollution that may negatively impact regional or global environments.

Environmental Risk Management

Strengthening Preventative Strategies, and Implementing Training

Mazda's environmental risks arise from the diverse aspects of its operations—in manufacturing areas such as production processes and facilities, through to products, distribution, and R&D. We conduct environmental risk assessments to minimize risks and to prevent pollution and other incidents, and we have in place a variety of preventative strategies. We also conduct periodic emergency response training at our factories and offices aimed at forestalling environmental risks.

Each plant and facility carries out its own periodic environmental monitoring to confirm air and water quality.

  • Environmental Monitoring
Environmental monitoring checklist Scope of monitoring Monitored categories Number of inspections
Air Boilers, melting furnaces, heating furnaces, drying furnaces, etc. SOx, NOx, particulate matter, VOCs (four categories) Approx. 550/year
Water quality Waste processing water Cadmium, cyan, organic phosphates, lead, hexavalent chromium, etc. (42 categories) Approx. 1,800/year
Noise/vibration Levels at plant perimeter Noise levels, vibration levels (2 categories) Approx. 90/year
Odor Levels at plant perimeter Odor index (1 category) Approx. 10/year
Waste Slag, sludge, dust, etc. Cadmium, cyan, organic phosphates, lead, hexavalent chromium, etc. (25 categories) Approx. 540/year

Compliance With Laws

No environmental accidents

Again in FY2007, there were no accidents or incidents that could have resulted in environmental pollution, nor were there any notifications regarding these from authorities.

Complaints comprised three notifications from authorities with regard to neutralizing odors at the Hiroshima Plant, but we have tightened up operational management, and are implementing well-planned odor countermeasures.
