With Our Employees

Health Maintenance and Improvement

Mazda is implementing companywide health promotion activities that emphasize strengthened mental health measures and promote lifestyle improvements. Through these activities, we are working to maintain and improve the health of our employees.

Health Checkups

In addition to health checkups for all employees, Mazda carries out half-day general physical checkups for employees aged 30, 35 and 40 or more. Based on the results of these health checkups, we also promote health by offering guidance from company doctors and nurses and diet contests through the corporate Intranet.

  • Rate of participation in healthcare examinations: 100%
  • General health checks (for employees aged 30, 35 and 40 or more): 11,532 cases
  • General periodic health checks (other than those above): 10,062 cases
  • Special health checks: 8,512 cases
  • Overseas health checks: 505 cases

Preventing Ill-Health and Accidents Due to Overwork

In April 2003, Mazda initiated a system where company doctors conduct interviews, and nurses offer guidance to prevent potential sickness resulting from overwork. This system applies to employees who work 100 hours or more of overtime in a month, or if overtime during the past two to six months averages 80 hours or more, and those who work more than 45 hours per week and for whom consultation is recommended by company doctors.

In July 2007, we started a No-Overtime Week system in which these employees are prohibited from working overtime and from working on holidays.

To prevent the accumulation of fatigue, we have introduced a three-part health status check that we have called the SEE Check, which comprises reciprocal confirmation with supervisors about sleep (Are you sleeping enough?), eating (Are you eating well?), and enjoyment (Are you finding time to enjoy life?).

Measures to Prevent Lifestyle-Related Diseases

Lowering the Rate of Smoking

Mazda has implemented a companywide smoke-free day with the ultimate aim of reducing its ratio of smokers to 27.0%. This has system resulted in a year-on-year reduction in the ratio of smokers, with our smoking rate dropping to 37.2% in FY2007.

Walking to Improve Health

Mazda has also set 70% or more 10,000-step days as a companywide goal, and is promoting walking through measures such as the distribution of pedometers, the Eco-Walk Commuting Program (with allowance payment) and the establishment of an internal walking course.

In FY2007, we held the Mazda Active Walking event, which aims to encourage employees to walk a total of 2,000 km to 3,000 km each year. We also provide tools on the Company Intranet that help employees record their distances walked, thus increasing their interest in walking, and we are implementing measures to support improvements in employee health.

Lifestyle Improvements and Preventing Metabolic Syndrome

In FY2008, specific medical checkups and healthcare guidance became mandatory, and we plan to improve programs aimed at lifestyle improvements and preventing metabolic syndrome, while continuing to take into account the needs of the employee and of the workplace.

Mental Health

We have developed a consultation system comprising a team of five full-time company doctors, one part-time mental health occupational physician, and 28 nurses. We conduct ongoing seminars both for managers and supervisors and for employees (autogenic training, etc.).

In FY2007, labor and management cooperated to establish the Mental Health Project, which aims to prevent mental illness and promote a more active workplace. This project team is central to the creation of a companywide support system for the prevention of mental illness.

For FY2008, Mazda plans to introduce occupational stress diagnoses, expand the education of workplace implementation leaders and managers, and hold a "Word Bouquet Campaign" for a more active workplace.
