With Our Employees

Work Safety and Health

Mazda has formulated a Safety and Health Creed and created a Safety Resolution for all employees. Furthermore, we conduct training to improve safety, carry out educational activities to enhance safety awareness, and are improving equipment safety.
We emphasize safety and health activities, which include our Group companies, and support training to raise awareness among managers, supervisors and employees.

Safety and Health Creed

For workers, safety and health are essential assets.

Our people are our most valuable resource, and we are committed to keeping them safe.

General Safety and Health Committee

Based on the Safety and Health Creed for the Safety and Health of Workers, Mazda works to develop human resources, workplaces and mechanisms.

Mazda has established the General Safety and Health Committee, whose members include management executives (executives responsible for safety and health, and each division's general managers) and labor representatives (Mazda Workers' Union leaders). In line with official agreements, committee members meet to discuss and decide each year's action plan and priority measures concerning safety and health.

Formal Agreements with the Mazda Workers Union on Safety and Health

  1. Various policies shall be discussed and determined annually by the General Safety and Health Committee.
  2. The Mazda Workers' Union shall be represented on each divisional Safety and Health Committee to exchange opinions.
  3. Periodic workplace inspections shall be conducted by labor and management representatives.
  4. Inspection meetings for accident recurrence prevention shall be conducted by labor and management representatives.

Mazda Work Safety Management System

PDCA Cycle for Safety and Health Management

Mazda has introduced a safety and health management system to ensure continuous and autonomous safety and health management. This system employs plan-do-check-act (PDCA) procedures.

The system's activity plan uses specific risk factors determined through risk assessments. We perform system assessments to determine and evaluate the operating status of the management system. This information is linked with the PDCA cycle to reduce the potential for work-related accidents and enhance overall levels of safety and health.

As a result of these initiatives, in FY2007 we had no serious accidents, and reduced downtime due to other accidents.

Risk Assessment Activities

In 2005, we conducted risk assessments of all facilities to determine potential risks during manufacturing and testing activities at factories, as well as in office work. We introduced countermeasures based on these factors. In FY2006, we began conducting facility risk assessments whenever equipment is introduced or changed. In this manner, Mazda is moving from recurrence prevention to a pre-emptive system.

In FY2007, we implemented risk assessment activities not only in factories, but also in the development and all other departments that use equipment.

System Auditing Activities

Mazda implements system audits to support the appropriate implementation of safety and health activities and conducts autonomous departmental improvement efforts.

As a result of these activities, workplace safety activities are viable and self-contained, weak points in safety and health activities can be clarified and improvements made by management, and activities can be changed from results-oriented to process-oriented.

Education and Training Concerning Workplace Safety and Health

Mazda conducts safety and health training within the Company, throughout the Group and at business partners. Within the Company, education in legal matters as well as skills improvement training for zero accidents are carried out by newly appointed trainers, including the Safety and Health, and other supervisors. In FY2007, we conduct 242 Safety and Health Training sessions, attended by 11,475 employees.

We also conduct training to enhance the skills of safety and health and other supervisors at consolidated companies; predict work and traffic risks; and as supportive measures for suppliers, hold safety and health training at affiliated companies and the Toyukai supplier organization. These measures have as their goals ensuring safety and health throughout the overall supply chain.
