Promoting A Balance Between Work & Personal Life

Mazda provides employees who have diverse values and lifestyles with a variety of options so that they can live fulfilling lives while managing their work and personal lives. To this end, Mazda has a system to promote a beneficial work-life balance.

Systems to Support a Work-Life Balance

In FY2002, Mazda set up the Waku-Waku Kids En in-house daycare facility for employees with pre-school children. A nurse is on duty and looks after children who become ill.
  • Nursing Leave
We have a special leave system that allows employees to take leave without using their annual paid vacation in the event that a family member is ill. This system applies not only to employees' children, but to any member of the family who lives in the employees' home. Up to 10 days per year of leave may be taken in this way, at the rate of 70% of the paid leave wage. These terms exceed the legally stipulated levels. This leave can also be taken in half-day units.
  • Leave for Employees Accompanying a Transferred Family Member
Fixed-term leave is granted for employees who accompany their spouse to a transfer posting. This allows employees to return to Mazda and resume their career at the same point as when they left.
  • Career Development Leave
We operate a leave system for employees to attend college or other training courses that contribute to their career development.
  • Super-Flextime
Most of our workplaces have adopted a flextime system for administrative and technical staff who have no fixed office hours, enabling each employee to plan and manage his or her own time.
  • Half-Day Paid Leave System
Employees are allowed to take a paid half-day of leave. This option helps employees balance their work with such duties as child-rearing, nursing, or carrying out personal business at government offices, etc.
  • Special Working Arrangements for Employees Involved with Child-rearing or Nursing
Staff responsible for childrearing or for caring for other family members can work shorter or more suitable hours. Special arrangements for child-rearing are applicable until the youngest child enters the second grade of primary school, and for care of family members, for as long as is required.
  • Promotion of Planned Use of Paid Leave
We promote the planned use of paid leave by employees, and consequently more than 90% of paid leave is taken.
  • No Overtime Day and Lights-Out Policy
We are promoting the coexistence of business efficiency and personal lifestyles by implementing a no overtime day once a week and a regular lights-out time (9:30 p.m.) in all clerical and technical divisions.
  • Go Home Early Campaign
By promoting work streamlining for offsite workplaces, we have reduced the current long working hours. Through cooperation between labor and management, we have implemented a campaign to promote the development of an environment in which employees can use more creativity in their work. We are increasing no-overtime weeks and days, and presenting good case examples. Furthermore, we are using informal discussions between labor and management at each location to exchange opinions and information.
  • Paid Leave for JICA Activities
Employees participating in Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) activities are entitled to take paid leave for these activities.

System to Support Employees' Environmental Conservation and Social Contribution Activities

Employees can apply to have costs incurred in their volunteer activities accumulated as points for use in a Cafeteria Plan, in which points collected every year can be used to receive various benefits.

In April 2007, Mazda renewed its system for providing paid leave to employees who participate in JICA activities, and this support will continue into the future.

Supporting the Development of the Next Generation

In May 2007, Mazda was awarded the "Kurumin" certification mark, based upon the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare's Law to Promote Measures to Support the Development of the Next Generation, and as well as implementing measures to promote a balance between work and personal life, we have also implemented the following initiatives.

  • Providing opportunities for skill development and a smooth return to the workplace for employees on child-rearing leave (e-learning).
Mazda implemented guidance in e-learning for employees on child-rearing leave in 2007, and all employees were able to attend lectures. We are considering expanding these activities in 2008.
  • Promoting understanding of a support system to combine work and child-rearing (companywide distribution of a special pamphlet).
In FY2007, we distributed a pamphlet, and from FY2008 onward we will distribute the pamphlet to new employees and those entering the Company mid-career.
  • An enhanced work environment conducive to child-rearing (introduction of half-day nursing leave system).
This system was introduced in March 2007, and in FY2007 86 employees took total leave of 417 days.
